I rewatched the 1995 AAA All-Star game (I've had way too much time on my
hands recently) and copied down some of the announcers' comments. Let's
see how many players folks can accurately identify (sometimes I am
paraphrasing):
1. "He has absolutely dominated the International League in 1995...he
throws a big-league knuckle-curve." (Mets prospect)
2. "He had a monster College World Series two years ago...so many
tools...where do you put him? You want to maximize the skills and
potential you have...you know he'll hit eventually...he'll hit for power
and average...there's concern about his defense." (Cubs prospect)
3. "The youngest player in AAA baseball...just doing a great job...you
talk about a bright future...aggressive." (Dodgers prospect)
4. "I have been so impressed with [him]...you read so much about him. 21
years old...to work the count as well as he does is very
impressive...(after passing another baserunner) we praised his defense.
We praised his offense. Now let's talk about his baserunning. Perhaps it
was the excitement of an All-Star game." (Yankees prospect)
5. "He's going to get there...He brings so many tools to the third base
spot...stole 26 bases and was only thrown out twice last year...not much
power but knows how to drive in runs...great defense." (Blue Jays
prospect) (don't you love that announcer-babble about not much power but
RBI know-how)
6. "One of the Red Sox' premier power prospects...he can hit. He can
run." (outfielder)
7. "Fine shortstop prospect for Milwaukee...so solid at shortstop."
8. "I'm unpredictable...I can't find [The Book]" - manager (5-time
manager of the year in the minors)
If folks are interested, I may do another game at some point - I have a
couple older AAA All-Star games on tape

Yep. I hadn't recalled that he came up with the Mets...weren't Bill
Pulshiper and somebody else supposed to anchor the Mets staff alongside
Isringhausen? At least Isringhausen did become productive later on.

Yep. Wilson, Pulsipher, and Isringhausen were touted, and highly touted
at that, as "Generation K".

Just tell me it isn't Dwayne Hosey.

Yep. Even in AAA the media is making excuses for his mistakes.

Nope. As far as I know this guy never played for the Yakult Swallows.

Hollandsworth? He'd have been 22 at the time.

Nope. Hollandsworth was on Albuquerque (sp?) then - it was a pretty
crowded outfield.

Yep. He got the most raves of any of the NL players.

Well, then I'm done. I didn't catch the 1995 AAA all star game, and if the
Sox had a "premier power prospect" in the outfield, I must have blinked and
missed it.

Unfortunately for the Mets, they turned into "Generation Rx" .
