``As a matter of policy, we don't comment on speculation,'' Angels vice
president of communications Tim Mead told The Associated Press.

Further, the Angels would have to better $65 million over 5 years, because
Vladdy turned that down from the Orioles. His price tag is now too high
for the Marlins.

Fox Sports says Angels gave him 70 mil for 5 years.

I don`t think the Marlins never had any serious thought about signing
Guerrero, as a matter of fact, they denied offering or even talking to
Guerrero agent. Simple, they don`t have the money to offer a high profile
player like him, this kind of contract.

You're right, Bert. I think the payroll budget for 2004 is set at
somewhere between 50 and 55 mil, and those dollars are committed to
those players already signed or expected to sign. Plus it doesn't
include all those millions still owed to Pudge and Mike Hampton, at
least some of which must be paid this year. If they had enough left
over to sign Vlad, they probably would not have let Lee go.

I guess management will sit tight and probably try to sign another hitter,
(Mondesi maybe?) that can play the outfield and probably a left handed
relief pitcher, and who knows, maybe Pudge will still be available in May.

The Marlins will not make the first move to re-sign Pudge, and he has
too much pride to make the first move. He can retire now and he and
his family would live very comfortably for the rest of their lives.

I don`t think Pudge has retirement in his agenda, he still can play at the
majors level for a good 3-4 years. After 50 years following baseball, the
only pride i seen from professional athletes is "show me the money". Pudge
will play this year, and if his still available in May, he will probably
play with the Marlins, sure, if the price is right.

If the Marlins are the only one offering him that type of money, he might
wait until May, but if another team gives him the same offer he'll take it,
especially without all the deferred payments.

He signed yesterday with the Angels, 5 years, 14 mil, pending a
physical exam.

I agree, but nobody, at least officially, has come up with any offer. I
heard rumors that Baltimore might sign him as a DH. We`ll just have to wait
and see.
