I would take Gibson based in large part on his 1968 season (which IIRC
was the reason they lowered the mound), but you can't argue with
Koufax. Too bad he had to leave the game early.

What's amazing to me is that both of them had multiple seasons where
they pitched over *300 innings*.

When he was a pitcher for BOS, he did play every day. They would put him
in the outfield on his non-pitching days. Apparently Boston Red Sox had a
different policy than New York Yankees. Perhaps NYY had a more solid
pitching staff and just didn't need Babe to throw every 4th day?

I'd have to agree, but he's certainly got a better argument than Nolan Ryan, who
was mentioned by someone else in this thread. Maddux is clearly top 10, I
think, and I doubt Ryan's even top 20.

I'm not sure of what you are referring to with the "record" of 35 complete
games; Bob Feller had 36 in 1946. Since 1900, Jack Chesbro holds the record
for right-handers at 48 in 1904 while Irv Young (1905) and Noodles Hahn
(1901) hold the record for lefties. It gets crazier prior to 1900!

See http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/CG_leagues.shtml.

Not meant to detract from Ruth - his batting, pitching, fielding,
baserunning and throwing ability make him probably the best athlete ever to
play baseball.

P.S. I believe that Ruth held the record for consecutive scoreless innings
in the World Series until recently.

IIRC Whitey Ford broke that record in 1961.

Check out Charlie "Old Hoss" Radbourne in 1884 (I think). He had
something like 680 innings! 72 complete games, 67 wins, a couple of saves.

Although I see this was cross-posted to several groups, I can't believe no Dodger fans mention Sandy Koufax. Sure, his career was short-lived, but from 1963-1966 he thoroughly dominated the league and won 2 World Series with the Dodgers.

He won the Pitcher's Triple-Crown 3 out of 4 of those years. During those 4 years he had 97 wins against 27 losses, a 1.86 ERA, and 1228 strikeouts against 259 walks, 89 complete games and 31 shutouts.

Oh, and also he also threw 3 no-hitters and a perfect game from 1962-1966. So if I wanted the greatest pitcher of all time to throw one game for me in the 7th game of the World Series, I'd pick Koufax in his prime.

Apparently you didn't read my post. Of course, I'm not actually a Dodger

I never assumed you were. I was actually replying to the question, not your specific thread. I saw in your SIG that you're an Angel fan. My point was that nobody in the Dodger newsgroup had yet mentioned Koufax and all his achievements.

That's tough. The game changes, the stadiums change, the way pitchers
are used changes..heck..even the ball changes. I can't say that if Ryan
and Spahn pitched at the same time that Spahn would be better. I can't
look at 50 year old stats and project them into today's game...so all I can
do is go on what I have seen.. Personally I would probably give the nod
to Ryan but that's based solely on emotions. He seemed like the kind of
pitcher that could toss a no hitter at will. His motion was so fluid and
his
control was so great that he just seemed so powerful. Just my biased .02.
