Besides having one of the funniest names (first and last) ever for a
MLB pitcher, Balfour has made me wonder how the 2008 season might have
been different with this guy in the bullpen for the Twins.

What happened to him? He was sort of OK with the Twins (ERA: 4+) for
a couple of years, then he was awful (small sample size) for the
Brewers early last year (ERA: 20.25), so he went to the Rays, where he
was pretty bad (ERA: 6.14). Then this year he has 58.1 IP, 6 wins, 2
losses, and an ERA of 1.54, and his strikeout numbers are way up.

See, this is why I could never be a front office guy for a MLB team.
I see a story like this (or, to a lesser extent perhaps, Nick Punto
this year) and I think: Oh, you just have to wait these guys out.
When they stink, if you just wait long enough, they get good again.
If I had been Terry Ryan back in the day, Luis Rivas and Lew Ford
would probably still be Twins. Could they be due in 2009?

Oh, and I forgot to ask: Where was he in 2005 and 2005?

Heh. No, they're not due.

Balfour is the exception to the rule and I can't fault the Twins at all for
letting him go. The Rays got lucky. They have a lot of guys playing a
career levels right now and seemingly hit the lottery with a lot of guys
including Balfour, Pena, and Wheeler.

That's true of any successful team, though... almost by definition a team
that wins the WS has a few guys play way over their heads to get them
there... The Twins in 1987 had several guys go absolutely nuts in the
postseason (Gagne, Lombo) for instance.
