He calls a press conference to tell the media and the public he's
sorry. Then he informs everyone he can't discuss what he sorry about.

Classic.

one thing I don't get about that whole story: is anyone really uncertain of
the purpose for that apology? I mean, sure he didn't go out and say it
straight up, but then we all know what's up because sealed testimony was
released to the press . . . Not that I'm defending the guy or implying
that he shouldn't be a big fat target for scorn, but it seems like
everyone's trying really hard to be pissed that he wasn't detailed in his
apology. He may be a jackass, but I don't fault him for trying to keep his
ass covered -- especially considering the source of his troubles recently.

Well, I think that shows that the Yankees are looking for any reason
to drop his contract. He can't publically admit he used 'roids as
there is a clause in the contract that would allow the Yankees to
dump him, and his contract.

Sounds to me like he is protecting his ill-gotten gains with a lot
of double talk.

``I am saying I'm sorry, but I can't tell you what I am sorry for
because it would cost me a lot of money.''

I heard that the hated Yankees waived the clause with respect to Steroids at
Giambi's
request, when they signed him.

In other words, they wanted him enough that they didn't care about Steroids.

For what it's worth, I heard it on ESPN radio, Mike and Mike in the
morning....

But he still has a clause that says he will not do ``unhealthy
things''that might effect his ability to play. (Same clause that
they got Boone on, I think). Those clauses are usually the big
catch all so I am sure the Yankees didn't mind taking out specific
language about 'roids. I am sure the fact that it was asked to
be specifically removed could be used as an effort of ``bad
faith'' on his part during the contract negotations. Another
reason he doesn't want to openly admit to using them.

The fact that he didn't come out and say:

``I made a huge mistake in taking steroids. I am sorry that I
have left people down because of my steriod use.''

indicates to me that his agent and laywer told him to not admit
to anything when apologizing for it.

I'm under the impression that the Yankmees wanted him to call the
conference before ST began so that the other players wouldn't be
bombarded by the media. I doubt very much that it did any good but I
heard somewhere that Cashman put Giambi up to it.
