In Saturday's game Gomez swung at a ball that was at least 12-14
inches outside. It seems to me that Gomez has been striking out a lot
of late so I looked up his stats. He's 2nd in the AL with 89 K's in 83
games. He's on a pace for 174 strikeouts this year. If he "achieves"
this it would put him at 27th most K's in a season, all time. This
would easily eclipse the Twins' franchise record of 145 strikeouts in
a season by Bobby Darwin (1972). Gomez is the Twins' lead off hitter.
Also, he has reached first base 10 times in the past 10 games (8
singles, 2 walks) and has 1 stolen base to show for it. This is the
Twins' lead off hitter.
His OBP is .305. This is the Twins' lead off hitter.
Meanwhile, since Denard Span was called up his OBP is .396; when he
was at Rochester it was .431.
C'mon Gardenhire, move Gomez to the #9 spot and put Denard Span at
leadoff.
