Let me get this straight. The Orioles sign utility infielder to a
$850K contract last week, and then leave him unprotected in the Rule 5
draft, losing him to Philadelphia?

Not that he's any great loss, but it kind of makes you wonder what the
heck they were thinking in signing him in the first place.

The Orioles mistake was that they announced the deal BEFORE the Rule 5
draft. Washington Nats did not announce the deals for Hammonds and
Cordero because of these. In fact, the Orioles may be trying to
re-acquire Gomez.
