I was shocked when I heard that GMjr was released. The Braves grabbed
him. Can someone explain this to me. After the year he had last year.
We are keeping Kingsale and let Matthews go.

Trace's explanation is almost certainly right. Sadly.

The Pads will squander millions on the likes of Randy Meyers
and Ray Lankford, and then fight Tony Gwynn over a few hund-
red thousand, and release Gary Matthews Jr. who has talent,
drive and guts.

On a brighter note, Gary will be on a contender this year.
Whether he would have been here remains to be seen.

He was due a raise in arbitration and the Padres didn't want to pay a
million dollars for a 4th or 5th outfielder.
