Baseball is a business. As Ricky Bobby (so hard to type that w/ a str8
face), pointed out he was not a family member, he was a co-worker. In
my workplace, the business doesn't shut down when a co-worker dies.

It has nothing to do with respecting him or not. They could have just
as easily had devoted a space of time during the game to remember this
person or perhaps had a collective moment of silence.

In reality, probably the best way to have honored him was to have gone
on with the game. After all, the show must go on as every professional
knows, and there is nothing a ballplayer likes less than a day without
baseball. Why he's probably sitting up there in heaven right now,
looking down and saying,"Hey guys, it's great that you remember me,
but why couldn't you have at least played a game of baseball? I was
looking forward to giving them Cubbies a good ass-whipping today, and
I even brought my glove to catch one of Albert's blasts if it makes it
up here".

The official rules say that every teams plays every Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday. Where is the respect for that?

Did the Cardinals organization gather up at the clubhouse and have a private
memorial service? Of course they did not. They took Sunday off.

We pray that this situation never happens again but MLB should make a policy
for a team refusing to play.

I believe you need find out the difference between being a co-worker in
a business environment and a team member in a sport environment.

If you cannot differentiate that difference, then anything I or anyone
says, isn't going to help.

There are five stages of grieving: Denial, anger, bargaining,
depression, and acceptance. You can't play a baseball game when his
teammates, many who perhaps were close friends, are in the first stages
of grieving. Baseball players are human beings not robots and in the
vast scheme of life, the game of baseball is meaningless and cancelling
one game or even their next few games is not a big deal.

I understand the Cardinals postponing the game, but this is a pretty
recent practice. (I can't say trend; hopefully this will never happen
often enough to form a trend.) There have been seven times when a
Major League player died during the regular season. Darryl Kile's
death in 2002 was the first time a game was postponed because of a
player's death. In 1979, Thurman Munson died on an off day, but the
Yankees played their regularly scheduled game the next day. In 1978,
Lyman Bostock was shot to death on a Saturday night during a weekend
series against the White Sox, and the Sunday game was played as
scheduled (the Angels won).

They are not robots; they are *professional* baseball players. As a
professional, you function even under difficult circumstances,
especially at the salaries these guys are getting! (And quite
honestly, to say that it was a huge tragic loss to the whole team
would probably be a bit of a stretch as he was with the Cards for a
bit over a year). Whatever the case, to say that someone has special
dispensation just because they play sports seems an artificial
distinction that has no basis in any logic, in any universe.

To me, this trend (as OP pointed out) is perhaps another indicator of
the extent to which baseball has become player oriented (as opposed to
being fan oriented).

Shit... my sincerest apologies about the asinine SUV crack I made. My
head must've been up my ass this morning. Only Ricky Booby would know
for sure, though.

Really, gang, I'm truly sorry. I just wasn't thinking, and I
apologize. I really was not going for a cheap laugh there at the
Hancock family's expense.

When you loose a friend and teammate do to a sudden deathe the mlb
rules don't mean squat. Anyone who thinks the game should have gone
on. Should see his shrink.

Actually, douche bag, all of the players were at the stadium Sunday,
to grieve together.

If you had a mother, would go to work the day after she died? Oh,
wait, you don't even have a job, let alone a mother.

Crawl back under the bridge, troll.
