Swing cursor. As the batter, you use the analog stick to pick your spot
in the strike zone, with free movement available right up until the
moment you swing the bat. In the zone, out of the zone, high, low, it
doesn't matter. When you get really good you can try to hit behind the
run or loft a sac fly, or squeeze the ball though a hole in the infield.
The control is pretty good. The same holds true for bunts, too. You
don't just press the "bunt" button, you press and then move your bat
around to make contact. If you're really good you can even direct the
bunt with some pretty good control.
The display shows nine zones, but those are hot/cold zones and have
nothing to do with the actual swing mechanic. They just tell you that
the batter is susceptible to pitches high and inside, or has a sweet
spot for pitches low and away, or whatever. I think it rates each zone
something like Really Hot, Hot, Normal, Cold, Really Cold (deep red,
red, no color, blue, deep blue).
The pitcher controls are similar. Cursor to pick the targeted spot, with
location being the last spot you press the "release" button. Doing that,
you can play two-player and still have your opponent not knowing where
you're delivering the ball despite the visible cursor, since you just
keep moving that cursor around even after you've hit the button. As the
pitcher grows tired, they hit their spots less and less.
