With no out and Ryan on second, Barton, with Ankiel and Pujols up
next, sacrifices Ryan to third.
Why give an out to move up a man who'll score on a single?
To make it worse, Ankiel struck out, Pujols was i-walked and then Ryan
was caught in a double-steal.
Pretty bad all-around...

I don't mind the call. Barton has speed and can beat a good bunt out, and
it gives you a runner on 3rd with less than one out. I probably wouldn't
have made the call, but I understand the logic behind it. Plus, Glaus was
hitting after Albert, so either way, there not going to pitch to Albert.
Basically boils down to what has the better chance of happening 1. Barton,
Ankiel, or Glaus get a hit, or 2. Ankiel gets anything to score the runner
from 3rd, or Glaus gets a hit, plus the chance of Barton beating out a bunt,
or making the pitcher make a play.

So that he can score on a fly ball or ground out.

Barton was showing bunt all the way, not going for a hit.
It's strange to give up an out with the meat of the order coming up
next. It's pretty much giving away a try for a big inning.
Maybe it plays into '2 leadoff men' with the pitcher batting 8th...

This has been one of my biggest complaints about LaRussa ever since he
came to St. Louis. Interestingly enough, most local fans think he
doesn't do it enough.
