So Coastal advances on the penetrations tie-breaker?

(That only sounds obscene if you didn't go to high school in Texas.)

First time in forever that the regular season champ has won this one.
Fear Lamar. Again. They'll get screwed with a #3-seed, again, and beat
the 2-seed. Again.

This puts a serious damper on my dream of NMSU playing Rice on a
Wednesday in Omaha. I was obviously thinking of A&M.

This is incorrect. There are only 13 available, as 11 of them have been
guaranteed to the SEC.

So, assuming teams with records below .500, west of the Mississippi,
and north of the Mason-Dixon line are ineligible for at large bids, how
many schools will be applying for admittance to the SEC before sunrise
tomorrow ?

The next 24 in the p-RPI list are:

Arizona State
Florida
Vanderbilt
Clemson
Texas A&M
North Carolina State
Washington
Long Beach State
Tennessee
Mississippi State
Southern Mississippi
Cal-Irvine
Texas Tech
Nebraska
Auburn
North Carolina
Central Florida
Arizona
Birmingham-Southern
Baylor
Southern California
Tulane
College of Charleston
Houston

Assuming Baylor and USC (having losing records) don't make
the field, the next two teams in the p-RPI list are

George Mason
UCLA

Missouri, St. John's, Texas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, and
Alabama are the next five on the list.

Other than finding a way to get Alabama in the field, does anyone
see the NCAA taking someone other than the RPI top 24 remaining
teams ?

Apparently, all OSU has to do is show up and wait for their opponent to choke
the game away.

Oops. That should read 7-5, CCU

Didn't they adopt the NCAA format and scrap penetrations?

Lowest seed in the tourney...but they were also the host.

I'm trying to recall if they've ever lost a game in this tournament.

Yep. The Southland perenially is one of the more underrated leagues,
IMO.

Dood, I'd be shocked if A&M wasn't sent to Houston...but then again,
with so many choices of regionals just to the east to send them to
instead, perhaps I shouldn't be. (Since I said that, the aggies will
likely be sent someplace wierd like Palo Alto.)

Well, they have 5 in already, so that would only leave 7 SEC teams
eligible for at-large berths...unless ofcourse the SEC starts getting
extra berths for JV or split squad teams.

I've got Texas Southern rated about 20 places lower than YSU.

Actually, I'll follow up this flippant comment with a serious one. I've
seen Texas Southern, and they have a couple of white guys and a lot of
latinos. I'm guessing slightly less than half of their players are
black. The Austin American Daily Texan (statesman.com) had an article
today about this problem. Last season, only 6.1% of all NCAA baseball
players were black. Of the 351 players in the Big 12 this season, only
10 were black. Three teams (Texas, A&M, and Kansas) had zero black players.

There are undoubtedly a lot reasons for this disparity, but 11.7 is
obviously a pretty big contributing factor.

I'll again state that this scholarship limit is one issue (maybe the
only one) I'd like to see Jesse Jackson get his nose into.

I'd be absolutely shocked if they did that. They're certainly not going to
admit Baylor and USC, and I doubt BSC will get in, either.

I think that if they *do* just let in the next 24 on the RPI, it'll go a long
way to proving to the community at large how worthless the RPI is.

So, they took the list of the next 26 available in the RPI's, dropped
8th place Nebraska and 10th place Auburn, and a Houston team one
game over .500, went scrounging to find Middle Tennessee, and were
done.

It appears they overriding philosophy in this year's committee was --
"Let's not waste a lot of brain cells on this, OK ?"

Did one of them get on TV and say, "We really don't use the RPI that
much" again?

ORU is 24-1 in the Mid-Con tournament since joining the league before the
1998 season (they lost a second-round game to Southern Utah in 2000). The
Golden Eagles are 138-16 in league play over their seven years as a member.

That is very impressive, even when you adjust for the general weakness of the
Mid-Con. I was kind of rooting for them to go undefeated in league play this
year.
