Detroit Tigers RP Fernando Rodney replaces RP Todd Jones as closer
http://www.kffl.com/article.php/91013/379
July 27, 2008
By Jared Byrd
Edited by Tim Heaney
Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said relief pitcher Fernando Rodney would replace
reliever Todd Jones as the team's closer, according to The Associated Press.
The 40-year-old Jones has 18 saves this year, but the erratic righty has blown three
of his last seven save opportunities. He has allowed 46 hits in only 39 2/3 innings,
with 15 walks and just 13 strikeouts. Opposing batters are hitting .293 against him
this year.
Jones holds the club record with 235 saves and is 14th on the all-time list with 319.
Rodney, who missed the first two months of the season with an injury to his right
shoulder, is 0-2 with a 5.14 ERA, but opposing batters are only hitting .192 against
him. In 14 innings, he has allowed 10 hits, walked eight and struck out 12.
He has one save in 2008 and 21 in his career but has never had more than nine saves
in any given year. He gave up one run (along with another inherited runner) in a
non-save situation Sunday, July 27.
Righty Joel Zumaya left the same game with tightness in his throwing shoulder. He's
currently listed as day-to-day but could also see some time at the back end if Rodney
struggles.
The flamethrower has a 1.65 ERA in 16 1/3 innings with 16 strikeouts and 15 walks. He
has a career-worst .258 batting average against, though.

I hope Rodney is ready for this because he was more inconsistent than
Jones was before Rodney was injured.

It should really be Zumaya, but he's not ready right now either.

Rodney's control sure was not there in the 9th. He was lucky all 3 batters
swung at those high pitches!

If Zumaya could just control that fireball he throws, he could be
one of the better closers in the league, IMO.
Rodney is not a long-term closing option for the Tigers, IMO.
But....he *is* a better option than Jones right now, IMO.

Really? This Twins fan is still worried that the Tigers will awaken
and go on a tear. They've had a couple of 6 game win streaks but they
really haven't put together a decent run of 8, 9, or 10 games in a
row. I suspect they could still do that.
Who knows? The Tigers might be playing their typical season upside
down--lousy to start the season but then finishing strong. I wouldn't
give up yet. >> Stay informed about: Fernando Rodney replaces Todd Jones as closer |

I had front row seats in left field by the bullpen yesterday...Zumaya wasn't
happy with his control then. He was the only pitcher in the bullpen that
was consistently stretching out though, so I don't think he's completely
healed.

Not with the control he has. >> Stay informed about: Fernando Rodney replaces Todd Jones as closer |

bad analysis. Part of the game, for a pitcher, is getting the hitter to
swing at your pitch. I'm sure you've noticed how often an aggressive hitter
will swing at a fastball at nearly eye level. >> Stay informed about: Fernando Rodney replaces Todd Jones as closer |

I suspect that's why this is being tried now, instead of April '09. It IS
time to start positioning this team for next year.

Yet Pudge and Thames seem to do it every game. >> Stay informed about: Fernando Rodney replaces Todd Jones as closer |

I don't know that you'd have too much to worry about really. The Tigers
pitching is riddled with injuries and not looking good at the moment. It's
still possible they could put a really nice winning streak together, but IMO
not very probable.

I haven't given up on them, but I'm not getting my hopes up for them either. >> Stay informed about: Fernando Rodney replaces Todd Jones as closer |

And probably too little, too late. Maybe not, but it's certainly not
looking very good for the Tigers this season.

Finally, a little honesty from you. What have I been telling you

Well, I did expect the serious fan to realize that positioning a team for
next year is not the same as giving up. Is moving Rodney to the closer role
really more desperate than leaving Jones there? Would trading one
experienced DH for a hot prospect or two be giving up? >> Stay informed about: Fernando Rodney replaces Todd Jones as closer |

Wise decision to use Rodney as the closer - The Tigers managed to hang on and salvage one game in the series with Chicago today. It's better than I thought they'd do. It was a very wise choice for Leyland to put in Rodney to close the game and hang onto the two run lead in the 9th, rather than....
