Frank brings up an excellent point - the competition in the Negro
leagues was not always Major League caliber.
I have no doubt that Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell would have been
legitimate All-Stars of their times if they played in the Major
Leagues. Their talent was the best of the best. But, a small degree
of uncertainty about "how good they were" sets in because they played
against some other Negro Leaguers that would have been sub-standard
Major League talent. I even read somewhere that exhibitions versus
unorganized "teams" were sometimes added to their stats for the year.
Was Gibson an 80 homer guy, with 40 coming off comparable Major League
talent, and 40 coming off minor league talent? Or could that number
60 homers off majors and 20 off minors? Nobody will ever know
conclusively, but the lack of comparable opposition he faced
consistently casts doubts over some of his numbers. It's not like he
faced a Satchell Paige every 4th day or 5th day. >> Stay informed about: Fastest Baseball Player |

It's almost impossible to rank an individual Negro League star among the
ML stars - we have enough arguments about where to rank the ML players
alone. But maybe you could extrapolate from the period where there was
some overlap - the decade or so after 1947 when Negro League players
(or players who would have been in the Negro Leagues) entered the majors.
You might get a sense of whether, say, the top 10 Negro League players
would be in the top 20, or the top 40-50.

this post sets a new standard in the category, "someone in r.s.bb knows more
about this than you do."
