in the 50s, mickey mantle was considered the fastest baseball player,
although camilio pasqual of the washington senators would often
challenge the mick to a race. it was said mantle could reach first base
in 3.1 seconds when batting lefty. this i do not believe unless they
timed him with a running start. the fastest sprinter in the world would
be hard pressed to run 30 yards in 3.1. seconds from starting blocks.
it's like those bogus 40 yard dash times that football players
supposedly run.
the fastest baseball player i ever saw was Willie Davis of the Los
Angeles Dodgers. as a high schooler i believe he ran a 9.5 second 100
yard dash. i think bo jackson ran something like 10.2 seconds for 100
meters which is almost ten yards longer.
any other speedsters come to mind who might match these two?

I think the 3.1 was from the time he took the first step. But that's not
from a stationary start; the follow-through on the swing has a lefty's body
leaning and moving toward first base, before the foot moves. >> Stay informed about: Fastest Baseball Player |

Deion Sanders. Not much of a baseball player, but he could fly around the
bases.

Well, the fastest player I ever saw in person was Devon White, but he had a
different kind of speed. He couldn't accelerate very quickly, but once he
got those long legs going, he could really cover some ground in a hurry. He
probably wouldn't do 100m particularly well, but the 100m after them would
be a snap.

As far as getting to 1st base the fastest, I'd say Ichiro and Cristian Guzman. >> Stay informed about: Fastest Baseball Player |

This is the correct answer for at least the modern era of baseball. Deion
was widely considered the fastest player in the NFL at the time also. He
still holds the NFL scouting combine 40 yard dash record... >> Stay informed about: Fastest Baseball Player |

Where is Rocco Baldeli's name in all of this? I didn't see his name
mentioned, are all of the reports false on his speed or is he just being
overlooked in this thread?

Omar Moreno
Billy North
Paul Blair - probably not really speedy on the basepaths, but similiar to
outfield speed that someone posted about Devo White.

Sanders would be a good candidate. Others I've seen would be Bob Tolan
(pre-Achilles tear), Willie Wilson, Eric Davis, Ralph Garr, and, as you
mentioned, Willie Davis.
Perry
ps -- it was Pedro Ramos who regularly challenged Mantle, not Camilo
Pascual. >> Stay informed about: Fastest Baseball Player |

Its a shame that, just like when talking about
the greatest player ever, people forget Oscar
Charleston. So far no one mentioned in this tread
was faster than Oscar Charleston.

Three guys who are playing today who are somewhere near the top of the
list: Twins Jacque Jones, M's Ichiro, and Tigers Andres Torres. I
have timed Ichiro and Jones as fast as 3.6 to 3.65 from home to first
(Jones best time was 3.60 on a lefty drag bunt). I have never times
Torres from home to first, but the old manager in Detroit (Phil
Garner) and his staff time Torres in the 60 yard dash at 5.95 seconds
in spring training 3 years ago. Torres did it so fast, that they made
him run it again because nobody believed he could get it under 6.00,
and he ran a second 60 in 6.00 flat.
For the record, a lot of bases are stolen with reading the pitcher and
a good lead, rather than raw speed. Speedsters get caught if they
rely on their speed. Jacque Jones is not a good basestealer, yet he
is probably one of the fastest 2 or 3 guys in the game if timed in a
sprint. Torii Hunter is another guy who runs like the wind, but has
never been good at stealing. >> Stay informed about: Fastest Baseball Player |

He is certainly very fast(especially for a white guy), but he probably isn't
even the fastest player on his own team(Crawford is). >> Stay informed about: Fastest Baseball Player |

Would Bobby Tolan have been just fine after a rehab today, or was the

I thought that was Darrell Green. I could be wrong. Was Jesus holding
the stopwatch? At least Green ran an accurately timed 10.08s 100-
meters, though he never played major league baseball. >> Stay informed about: Fastest Baseball Player |
