First off let me say I agree with Ethier...but...Pierre is the faster and
did provide a lot of speed at the top of the line-up. The guy isn't
completely worthless. Still...Ethier.

Well said, AG.

At this point, I think the *team* is best served to have Pierre available to
pinch run in the late innings. I know management wants some return on their
investment in Pierre, but imagine the ROI on Ethier's contract if he even
comes close to continuing to hit the way he's been in ST.

I disagree. Pierre hurts the team defensively. How many fly balls fell
(without being scored an error) because despite his speed he couldn't get to
them? How many runners tagged up and went from second to third on weak fly
balls to center? Pierre is a defensive dead weight. Any contributions are
completely eaten up by his mistakes and inability. I was excited to see him
come over as I love speed. I will be happier to see him go.

Many years ago, Pierre would have been brought up a second baseman. His
running ability can be disruptive on the paths but he doesn't have the bat
or defensive ability in the outfield.

Second baseman?! I haven't seen a left handed second baseman yet. I don't
know what to think of Pierre. He's best on a team that already has 2 power
hitting outfielders and can play a corner. I never understood all the Pierre
bashing when the Dodgers signed him. How could you not like speed and 200
hits?

However, I completely get it now. A total defensive liability and doesn't
walk. Coletti should have known better. Another year of Lofton would have
been much better.

I can't recall seeing a player with so many 'worthless' hits. He is the only
guy I know that can hit a bases-loaded single so weak that no one scores.
That may be a *slight* exageration (grin) but you get my point.

Speed ain't worth much if you're not actually on base to use it.

A bases-loaded single so weak that nobody scores on? I love it!!!
Memo to Joe Torre: Please start Juan Pierre every day. <grin>

You guys have a short memory if you can't remember a time when Pierre made a
difference in runs. Having Pierre and Furcal at the top of the line-up
helped them plenty of times last year. Still...Ethier is a better choice to
start and I said so in the original post.... assuming he keeps up his
numbers. Last year I did a comparison and as far as OBP they were close
enough that Pierre was still a better option offensively. (note the
disclaimer ..I don't need a bunch of reminders about his defense). Unless
they can get something for him I say let him be a 4th outfielder / pinch
runner.

4 years ago in Florida? Who cares.

Helped them make plenty of outs.

Ethier: .350
Pierre: .331

Then figure slugging:
Ethier: .452
Pierre: .353

Explain how Pierre was the better offensive option?

this is year end numbers...I did the comparison around Sept I think and they
were only a few points difference...and remember Pierre could steal.

> Then figure slugging:
> Ethier: .452

Slugging is great so long as there is someone behind you to knock you in.
Ethier hits a double, Pierre hits a weak single than steals. Whats the
difference really? Last year was about manufacturing runs most of the time
and that takes speed. Pierre helped the Dodgers last year whether you want
to believe it or not.

> Explain how Pierre was the better offensive option?

Because he could take one more base than most runners so he could score from
first on hits that Ethier couldn't...heck, he could score from second on
hits that Ethier couldn't. That's how.
