Just because you *can* burn through a half-dozen bullpen arms doesn't mean
you *should* -- especially when you never even bother to use the best
reliever and inexplicably took out your starter at 91 pitches when he was
still looking good.

From time to time, we get a little frustrated with some of Gardy's moves...
but games like tonight remind us that it could be much, much worse.

I can understand pulling lefty Perkins with Renteria and Polanco
coming up. I don't understand bringing a lefty in to turn Carlos
Guillen around (he's virtually the same either way he bats) and lefty
Clete Thomas has pwned lefties this year (.545/.583/.727 in only 11
ABs).

Mind, the bullpen was fully rested, but yeah, Ullger made a few too
many moves. If the game would have gone extra innings the Twins had
only Nathan left in the pen.

Yeah, had retired 10 of 11 and they pulled him. Not just hindsight,
since I groaned even then. They pissed this game away, no doubt.

I guess I assum that Gardy was still making these calls from the
clubhouse. All you need is a TV and a cell phone.

Hard to say, all I know is I didn't like the move at the time either. The
problem with taking out a starter who has been cruising is you're
introducing unnecessary unknown quantities to the situation -- on any given
day, there is likely one guy in your BP who has no business being on the
mound... Crain was apparently that guy.

Detroit has a really, really good offense and so it could've happened to
anyone, but at 91 pitches Perkins looked like he was far from done. He did
NOT look happy about being pulled, either...

Yes, boneheaded move. Ulger had to be the one calling the shots
on that one...I can't Gardy doing that so early with Perkins pitching
as well as he was. Not after Slowey got the complete game the night
before.

One of Gardenhire's things is giving starters a lot of leash... the exact
opposite happened last night. Seemed very un-Gardy... I think Ulcer
probably made that call.
