Since the beginning of time and since the beginning of public
relations nightmares, the way of the ego-maniacal athlete/movie star/
rock star/politician has gone a little like this:

1. Egomaniac does something regretful.
2. Publik finds out.
3. Agent/Manager/Publik Relations says "keep low; stay quiet; let this
cool down a bit."
4. Egomaniac replies "NOT ON YOUR LIFE; I NEED TO PROTECT MY
REPUTATION!!!!111"
5. Agent/Manager/Publik Relations says "oi vey."
6. Egomaniac goes on a media storm to defend actions.
7. Agent/Manager/Publik Relations says "I quit."
8. Egomaniac becomes pariah and has to put tail between legs and
possibly do jail time.

whatever.

Roger Clemens was a great pitcher. He could have kept this mental
image in the collective mind of sportsfans everywhere if he would have
let his handlers do what they get paid to do. Now, he will be another
embarrassing paragraph (with footnotes) in baseball history, like Pete
Rose.

Well, for the movie star/rock star, any publicity is good publicity.
