It's getting tougher to justify giving Willis the ROY. His last start
against the Phillies resulted in his giving up four runs in 6 2/3 innings
in a game the Marlins lost 5-4.
He's also not likely to qualify for the ERA title (a pitcher must have 1
inning per game played by his team--i.e., 162 innings). He only has 149
2/3 with one start left.
Webb, on the other hand, has 172 2/3 innings with one start to go, and
while his ERA is fourth-best in the NL, the gap between 1st place (Jason
Schmidt, 2.33) and fourth (Webb, 2.50) is less than half the gap between
4th place and 5th place (Schilling, 2.95). In other words, the top four
pitchers are clumped in a bunch. Everybody else is fairly far behind
them.
According to Peter Gammons, the Giants' coaches unanimously picked Webb as
their choice for ROY. Now if they only voted for the actual award....
