Thanks to the Dbacks and Webb for handling business and defeating the La's.

Much appreciated.

Nice to see them continuing business, despite ALMOST being out of
it... Congrats to WEbb on the 10th victory, and pretty much wrapping
up the ROY...

Agreed. It shows how professional they are. As far as Webb goes, as a
Giants fan I'd have to agree, he pretty much salted away the ROY,
however, Posednick is getting tons of late pub and support so watch out.

Have you seen ESPN or CNN sports lately? They still think that the only
rookie playing in the NL this year is Willis. And since they control what
much (most?) of America's writers see who knows how the vote will go.

Baseball Tonight has been talking up Brandon Webb for at least a month.
If the Marlins win the wild card and Willis is a big part of it (two
starts against the Phillies, I think I heard), then he'll probably get ROY
and maybe even rightly so.

If, however, Willis remains as inconsistent as he's generally been in the
second half, it's tough to snub Webb, who's not only been great (4th best
ERA in the NL), he's been amazingly consistent. Webb's W-L record is
entirely due to lousy run support, and I think the case has been made well
enough that the writers might actually notice how incredibly well Webb has
pitched.

It's getting tougher to justify giving Willis the ROY. His last start
against the Phillies resulted in his giving up four runs in 6 2/3 innings
in a game the Marlins lost 5-4.

He's also not likely to qualify for the ERA title (a pitcher must have 1
inning per game played by his team--i.e., 162 innings). He only has 149
2/3 with one start left.

Webb, on the other hand, has 172 2/3 innings with one start to go, and
while his ERA is fourth-best in the NL, the gap between 1st place (Jason
Schmidt, 2.33) and fourth (Webb, 2.50) is less than half the gap between
4th place and 5th place (Schilling, 2.95). In other words, the top four
pitchers are clumped in a bunch. Everybody else is fairly far behind
them.

According to Peter Gammons, the Giants' coaches unanimously picked Webb as
their choice for ROY. Now if they only voted for the actual award....
