The following I wrote was in response to his status as a "second half
pitcher" earlier this summer. The original posted listed his stats
from the three previous seasons.

Two factors seem to be responsible for the 1st/2nd half splits:
* improved skill: a huge drop in HR rate, a slight drop in BB rate
* improved luck: using estimates, his BIP batting average dropped from
..355 to .256.
I can't help but think that the second of these two factors played the
much bigger role. In fact, the first (the drop in HR) may be tied
directly to the second (the drop in H).
While I do concede that his second half performance is partly
attributable to truly improved pitching (as opposed to just dumb
luck), his reduced K rates in the 2nd half (from 6.2 to 4.9) must at
least temper that.
