Offhand, I think I'd have been unlikely to have been so certain.
That said, here are John Valentin's numbers, both in April and
for the full seasons he played for the Red Sox after 1995:
April season
1996: .336 OBP, .317 SLG .374 OBP, .436 SLG
1997: .245 OBP, .255 SLG .372 OBP, .499 SLG
1998: .347 OBP, .425 SLG .340 OBP, .442 SLG
1999: .244 OBP, .317 SLG .315 OBP, .398 SLG
1996: lousy start, pretty good final numbers
1997: really lousy start, very good final numbers
1998: pretty good start, pretty good final numbers
1999: really lousy start, lousy final numbers
Offhand, it looks like in only 1998, did he not hit
quite a bit better than he did in April, and only in
1999 was his overall production inadequate, though
that's all from just a cursory glance at the numbers.
