Again, I'm not a fan of how he started this year (to
put it mildly).

His current numbers: .121 AVG, .171 OBP, .182 SLG.

Yuck.

Now, check out these awful numbers:

..211 AVG, .262 OBP, .316 SLG
..253 AVG, .302 OBP, .354 SLG

They're better than Crisp's current numbers, sure, but
still horrific, right? The player who put up those
numbers (in April of 2004 and 2005 respectively), went on
to have final numbers like these:

2004: .297 AVG, .344 OBP, .446 SLG
2005: .300 AVG, .345 OBP, .465 SLG

You've likely guessed by now that the above player is
none other than Coco Crisp.

I'm NOT saying that Crisp's poor start is a good omen
or that a player who starts poorly and ends well in
previous years is necessarily going to end well after
a poor start this year. I am saying that he's struggled
in April before in years that turned out well. He's not
had enough at bats this year to conclude anything about
how he's going to play this year.

Here are his monthly splits for his career:

Apr .609 OPS
May .825 OPS
Jun .748 OPS
Jul .738 OPS
Aug .743 OPS
Sep .775 OPS

Historically, he's struggled in April. He's REALLY struggling
now. Perhaps he won't ever show the form he exhibited in 2004
and 2005. (And personally, I've got no problem with the Sox's
trying to get some more at bats for Pena and Hinske). But I
still don't think it makes sense to totally give up on Crisp,
especially given his track record of starting really slowly.

Catch you later.

Are you one of those who tried for 3 years to convince us that John Valentin
was off to a slow start ?

Offhand, I think I'd have been unlikely to have been so certain.
That said, here are John Valentin's numbers, both in April and
for the full seasons he played for the Red Sox after 1995:

April season
1996: .336 OBP, .317 SLG .374 OBP, .436 SLG
1997: .245 OBP, .255 SLG .372 OBP, .499 SLG
1998: .347 OBP, .425 SLG .340 OBP, .442 SLG
1999: .244 OBP, .317 SLG .315 OBP, .398 SLG

1996: lousy start, pretty good final numbers
1997: really lousy start, very good final numbers
1998: pretty good start, pretty good final numbers
1999: really lousy start, lousy final numbers

Offhand, it looks like in only 1998, did he not hit
quite a bit better than he did in April, and only in
1999 was his overall production inadequate, though
that's all from just a cursory glance at the numbers.

Catch you later.
