Every day the White Sox and Cubs both win I figure they are about 1/78th of
the way closer to the Second City Series becoming a reality. Of course
there will have to be four playoff series won after the regular season ends
but they can cross those bridges when they come to them.

That is the advantage of both teams leading their divisions. As long as
they keep on winning they cannot be overtaken.

The way this year has started out with economic crashes, floods, fires,
cyclones, and earthquake I am beginning to wonder.

The odds of a Sox-Cubs World Series are probably around
100 to 1. At the moment, with the Red Sox and the Rays
dominating the AL East, the White Sox would have to win
their AL Central. The NL Central has become congested
and looks like a three team race. I suspect the winner
of the NL Central will need to win 97+ games and the
runner-up (who will most likely be the Wild Card) will
need at least 95 wins. Regardless of the current
standings, that's not an easy row to hoe.

I do not follow the Cubs all that close but the White Sox are 8-2 over their
last 10 games which makes them the hottest team in baseball. So maybe it
will a White Sox vs National League Pennant Winner Series. Do not go to the
T Shirt maker and order them Second City Series shirts just yet.

As a fan of both teams, I'd make it several trillion to one. Unless
I die before the Series, it which case it may be even money.

Purely as a mathematical exercise, however, I'd make the odds
considerably shorter than 100 to 1, perhaps in the neighborhood of 35 to
1, reflecting each club's roughly 1/6 chance of getting to the Series
(roughly 2/3 chance of getting to the post-season times 1/4 chance of
winning two league playoff series).

I really don't give a rip whether the other team in town wins
anything. I'm not a fan of theirs and never will be.
All I care about is the White Sox winning it again.

Yes, one of two ways to guarantee the odds improve would be death or hell
freezing over. I'm liking the chances of this happening this year more so
than any other year in my life, but...

I don't think the Cubs can hang in there through the rest of the season with
a much more challenging schedule in the second half, starting pitchers' arms
being overused early in the season (with one injury so far), and a trade for
an oft-injured savior who has lost velocity. Not meant as a slam against
the Cubs' by a White Sox fan, just how it looks. I see either Philly or
Milwaukee representing the NL in the World Series this year, but I wouldn't
rule out the Cubs.

I like the Sox' chance much better; an easier schedule in the second half
than main competition Minnesota, TB, and Anaheim. Biggest fear - Detroit
plays up to potential and makes a run for it. I see either Chicago or Tampa
Bay representing the AL in the World Series, but don't rule out Detroit.

I agree 100% on that but in order to win the World Series the White Sox do
have to play some NL team. The Cubs sure would be a whole lot more
interesting than Houston.

I was born in a Chicago hospital and lived in Chicagoland for 33 years and I
never set foot in Wrigley and would not have if I lived there another 66
years. Would not have ever thought of it. I been everywhere else from
Milwaukee to Indianapolis and the Bulls and the Black Hawks and the Bears
and every horse race track but I never even as much as drove by the home of
the Billy Goat Curse to see it from the outside. I have seen it in the
movies because I did not advert my eyes quickly enough.

I have to disagree with you there. Although I never want to see the
cubs in the series they have a much easier road there than the Sox.
There are no strong teams in the NL. Unless the cubs completely
collapse they should win the NL easily. The NL is very weak. Neither
the Cardinals, Brewers or any of the other teams impress me at all.
The White Sox if they win their division will have to face teams in
the playoffs that are much better than any NL team.

Having said that I hope the Sox win it all & the cubs fail miserably.
