As a cinci fan I was just wondering how the locals in arizona feel
about losing Thom B. to the reds. Myself, and quite a few other
cincinnati radio listeners aren't very sold on the deal. Basically
because we are tired of Marty and his smug ways in the booth and how he
has become bored and seemingly bitter in his last few years.

Getting his son into the booth seems just a Gimmick and really offers
nothing for the fans, in my opinion. Essentially, nepotism.

I was just curious what the locals thought about losing Thom. Is he
really as great as they say he is? Was it really that difficult for him
and his family to pull up stakes and move from Az to Ohio? Personally
I'd rather have an ex-player in the booth with Marty, someone who can
offer insights into the game that an announcer just can't provide.

I just don;t see where having a father-son combo in the booth is of any
benefit to the fans, especially when neither had played the game.

Thanks

Brian

Oh, thats not encouraging that Thom can be self-righteous. Marty is
terrible in that way, and its just gotten worse in the past 5-10 years.
Of course, the Reds have basically been terrible during those years,
but thats no need to turn into a bitter old fart. I guess 33 years will
do that to you.

I lived in the SF Bay area during the middle and late 80's and the
Giants had a lousy team as well, but the announcer could make the game
enjoyable to listening to. He somehow would just make you chuckle over
things instead of getting pissed at someone. I can't recall who that
was, but he was the best announcer I've ever heard do a game. I think
it was Hank Greenwald. He had a terrible team and ballpark to work with
but really made it enjoyable.

Thom can be smug and more than a little self-righteous at times. I don't
know whether being in Cincy alongside his dad will make him more or less
humble.

I liked him, especially when he was paired with Bob Brenly, but as long as
the D-Backs don't get somebody completely insufferable to replace him, I
won't miss him too much.

Thom's wife is from AZ, so that might be an important factor in the
"difficulty pulling up stakes" angle you mentioned. Some friends of mine
moved from the Phoenix area to Cincy for about five years and couldn't
wait to get back to Phoenix, even though they made lots of friends in
Cincy. If Thom's wife becomes miserable and incurably homesick, he might
end up regretting his decision.

During the 1998 expansion season, the D-Backs were pretty wretched, and
were involved in more than a few obvious blowout games. Brennaman and
Brenly usually managed to make those games enjoyable by goofing around.
There were some shirtless guys at every game in Candlestick Park, freezing
themselves numb, and Brennaman labeled them Brenly's guys. Brenly took it
in stride and played along. Brennaman also chose a road trip in southern
California early in that season to dub D-Backs radio play-by-play guy
(Greg Schulte) "Tha Guvnah." That nickname has stuck and Schulte has even
embraced it.

I think Brennaman's sense of humor suffered a little when Brenly left the
booth in 2001, even though he wound up paired with the clownish Jim Traber
for a couple of seasons, and then got Mark Grace for a sidekick.

Now you got boorish and bombastic to go with.

He's calling the Tigers-A's game right now. You tell us. He's
no less pompous during the season. When he and McCarver
share a booth, you can scrape the verbal brylcreem off the
screen. Put Costas in there and I'd shoot my television.

Ever been to AZ? I don't know why anyone lives anywhere else.

Thom has an amazing depth of knowledge that he rarely displays
during the game. The couple of times I've heard him as a phone-guest
on sports radio shows, though, he's like a baseball encyclopedia
fielding
what is thrown at him. And he doesn't sound bombastic at all in that
situation. I think he's got some idea that he has to act dumber and
more blovious during the games, because the crowd is broader and
the play of the game is sacrosanct. I wish he'd bring telephone-voice
into the booth and drain his brain every night, but he never will.

But you'll get to hear great, three-inning-long stories about how they
discovered the BEST pancake syrup in the world.

And you'll be covered in it whenever they express their togetherness
as father and son.

We feel your pain.
