I believe I understand the arguments of my critics. I just do not believe
they warrant my changing my claims about Kendall's sitting out the second
game of Saturday's double header.
I do not believe Kendall was at any greater risk playing the second game of
the DH than he was playing the last game of the season today. To my eyes,
Kendall looked tired for about the past week. If fatigue poses a significant
risk to a player or if the Pirates believed it poses a risk, then Kendall
would or should have sat out more games over the past week than he did. As
it happened, no one thought or demanded of the Pirates that the team rest
Kendall for a day or two since the Cub's series of last weekend. McClendon's
actions implied that the Pirates clearly believed a fatigued Kendall
catching the second game of a DH was a poorer player than a rested Rivera or
Hernandez would have been. That implication does not appear true to me.
Kendall has no trouble whatsoever keeping his BA above the Mendoza line. Nor
has he shown a propensity towards injury during his career. He has shown he
has the ability to play many innings and to play through fatigue. So,
playing Rivera or Hernandez in place of Kendall was not a gain in capacity
for the Pirates in the second game of Saturday's double header.
Finally, I do believe the game should have been important to the Pirates-to
the Pirate players in any case.
