The night I was listening (Monday, I think), they were booing as he
walked to the plate. Maybe he kicked a cat on the way there.
I guess I'm just not a boo-er. I don't see that it accomplishes
anything at all, except maybe to irritate the player, which seems as
likely to make him play worse as to play better. For one thing, when
I played sports, I never once heard the crowd. Sometimes you'd get
kind of a surge of energy from a particularly loud crowd, but never
anything specific about which team they were rooting for or anything.
I doubt that anyone in the stands thinks, "Hey, if we boo, he'll
totally realize the error of his ways and start hitting better!"
They're mostly just making themselves feel better and acting up for
their friends.
