All of my CDN friends say "back catcher" instead of "catcher".
Why do they do that? Is there such a thing as a "front catcher"?
Also, why would somebody in Vancouver, BC root for the Blue Jays
when the Mariners are so close?
I would ask my CDN friends but they get offended by anything an American
asks.

....and still you ask why they would be Jays' fans instead of Mariners' fans.

We do it for the same reason that we call a hooded sweatshirt a
bunnyhug. It is part of our dialect.

1) Because the Blue Jays are a Canadian team
2) Because we get to watch all their games
3) Because they have won the World Series

But don't think there are no Mariners fans in Vancouver. There are
plenty. There are also Yankee fans, Red Sox fans, Giants fans . . .

Maybe there is something about the way you ask. I kinda think you get
the reaction that you are looking for.

Jim, thanks for your reply. It actually makes sense.
I never thought of it that way.
I just thought it might be because Canadians did not follow baseball much
except when the Blue Jays are in first place.
The first time I heard it was during a softball gathering.

I've never said back catcher in my life, but I've heard plenty of American
announcers say it.

And the real question is: Why would anyone anywhere root for the Mariners???
(other than for Ichiro, of course)

Well, it is like this.
I have lived in both Vancouver and Toronto and I can tell you that the
people of Vancouver are very much the same as the people of Seattle. The
have the same accent, watch the same TV shows. A lot of them are related.
They visit each others cities all the time. They have the same hobbies and
ways of life.
The people of Toronto are NO WAY NEAR the same as the people of Vancouver.
They are like night and day ! I have heard many people from Vancouver say
bad things about people from Ontario and people from Ontario slander the
western provinces in an extremely bad way, with hatred ! Yet, I have not
heard this between Vancouver and Seattle.
It just seems silly for a city like Vancouver to have to embrace the TORONTO
3000 miles away Blue Jays as the "local team".

Westerners hate Torontonians because they think they live in the
centre of the universe. It doesn't really matter because known
civilization ends just past Mississauga.

You have immature friends who haven't played the game a lot. I
haven't heard the term "back catcher" since I was in public school in
Toronto in the 60s, and I continue to play the game now.

As for Vancouverites not cheering for Seattle, your last comment
answers the question; some of us get offended by anything American,
these days.

But then, I happen to be a NY Giants fan.
