Archived from groups: alt>sports>baseball>pitt-pirates (more info?)

From back in the day when the Pirates had a baseball team. This is from the
Valley Independent.

John Bruce DalCanton
Carnegie

John Bruce DalCanton, husband of Helene Horovitz DalCanton, of Carnegie,
passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, in St. Clair Hospital following a brief
illness. He was born June 15, 1941, in California, Pa., a son of the late
Angelo R. and Iva Flynn DalCanton. He graduated from California Area High
School and earned his bachelor of arts and master of education degrees from
California University of Pennsylvania. Bruce, as he was always known to his
family and friends, pitched in the major leagues for 11 years and was, at
the time of his passing, the pitching coach of his beloved Myrtle Beach
Pelicans. His major league career began as a pitcher with the Pittsburgh
Pirates in 1967. His teammates included baseball Hall of Fame members
Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski and Willie Stargell. Bruce also pitched for
the Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves and the Chicago White Sox before
finding his true calling of teaching young athletes in the major and,
finally, minor baseball leagues. It was a return, of sorts, to his career as
a high school science teacher at Burgettstown High School. He was honored by
numerous sports and community organizations during his career, notably the
Western PA Sports Hall of Fame, and he was of the 13 elected as a charter
inductee to the California University Hall of Fame. In addition to his wife,
Bruce is survived by two brothers and one sister, Bernard DalCanton and wife
Irma, of LaPlata, Md., Diane Shook and husband Roy, of California, Pa., and
Brian DalCanton and wife Irene, of Redondo Beach, Calif.; two aunts, Irene
Flynn Hoskins, of California, Pa., and Vera Martin, of Burgettstown; and
several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by one sister, Cindy DalCanton. Friends will be received at the
BAGNATO FUNERAL HOME INC., 50 Jefferson St., Carnegie (412-276-3964), on
Thursday and Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated
Saturday, Oct. 11, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church, 310 Kane Blvd.,
Pittsburgh (Carnegie). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions
be made to: California University of PA Baseball Organization, California,
Pa., the Pittsburgh Pirates Alumni Charities, PNC Park, 115 Federal St.,
Pittsburgh, Pa. 15212, or to BAT (Baseball Assistance Team), 245 Park Ave.,
New York, N.Y. 10167.

39-47 again - The Pirates have won 4 in a row to get to 39-47. That's great but, I was checking on where they stood at this point (86 games) in the last several seasons. Other than last year, when they were horribly bad in the first half, they have been just..

How Do You Like Me Now? - Yins were griping to no end in April & May, but now that my OPS is up to .774 and climbing, you're silent. That trade wasn't so bad after all, was it? Signed, Adam LaRoche

Cubs Lose! - Cubs lose again. A Pirate win would put them only 7 games back. I know all the nay-sayers have a myriad of reasons why this team shouldn't, can't and won't compete, but if they can get it under 5 games by the All-Star break I'd be happy as a pig in mud..

On the road again - Everyone's favorite pitcher, Jimmy Anderson, is once again out of work. The Reds designated him for assignment today. So, where to next? Texas? The Newark Bears? Is Rickey Henderson still playing for them?

Best Pirate news of the last ten years - Kevin Young has been released! I hope Craig Wilson gets the extra at-bats instead of Matt Stairs.
