It was Brenly's way of telling Webb that he had confidence in Brandon's
ability to close things out. Personally, I would have had Carlos "The Male
J-Lo" Baerga in there to break things open, leaving the co-closers to clean
up the last two frames. Lord knows, they haven't had much closing work
lately. Still, it's understandable that Brenly went the way he did; there's
nothing inherently wrong with choosing either path.

No, more like, "Second, he brings in Mike Myers to give Bonds his birthday
gift."
Myers has been done for quite some time. What two months ago could have been
dismissed as a slow start or the effect of pitching out of his normal role
has, in the last couple of months, mestastasized into an overwhelmingly
obvious fact -- obvious to everyone but the willfully oblivious.
Look, I know Brenly has a lot of respect for the older guys on the club. I
know they've done the job for him (and against him) in the past. But the
simple fact is, some of these guys just can't cut it any longer. Loyalty,
though a wonderful human quality, is useless in the cold reality of
competition unless there's some reasonable cause to believe the individuals
in whom you place your loyalties are going to be able to perform at some
point.
There is absolutely no reason to believe that Myers, Grace, Bautista,
Dessens or Barajas will be able to repay those loyalties anytime soon.
Hell, there's damned little reason to believe that some of those guys will
=ever= be effective again.
We don't have room for aging question marks -- not when younger question
marks are available. And especially not when some of those younger guys have
punctuated periods of their abbreviated careers with exclamation points
already.

I just thought it was the height of stupidity and arrogance for Brenly to
send in Myers and actually pitch to Bonds.
Walk Bonds, then comes Cruz who likes to strike out or hit into double
plays, and then the pitcher's spot.... what the HELL was Brenly thinking?

Actually, in the past, Bonds has been somewhat human against
lefty-specialists, and that is the first HR Bonds has ever hit off of
Myers.

He was thinking Myers would do what they acquired him for--getting Bonds
out in tough situations. Of course, he completely ignored Myers' recent
history.

Was Oropesa available? I didn't see the game. Of course, this year,
Oropesa's actually been a lot more effective against righties than lefties
(and he's been damn effective against lefties).

Bonds has been putting old demons to rest ever since last year's playoffs.
Never a good idea to trust trends when he is involved.
Sheesh.. you walk Bonds, then pitch to Cruz. It ain't rocket science. Cruz
is far more likely to hit into a double play or strike out. Then comes the
pitcher's spot, and you'd probably see Gallaraga. Both far less fearsome
than Bonds.
I think it was all ego on Brenly's part. Put it all on the table, throw
the dice, and win or lose. Maybe I would have done the same thing in his
situation. He's flat pissed off right now.
BTW, in case you guys don't know, Bonds raced from the stadium last night
to be by his father's side. Bobby Bonds underwent open heart surgery today.
The preliminary results are that the operation was a success. Barry is
temporarily on emergency leave, and nobody knows when he will rejoin the
team.
Bobby Bonds is sufferng from lung cancer. He had a brain tumor removed
earlier this year. Why he needed heart surgery has not been disclosed.
Earlier in the season, Barry seemed overwhelmed by his father's illness.
Now, he seems to be feeding off it, using it as motivation.
Bobby Bonds is not an old man. It truly makes you stop and think. >> Stay informed about: Brenly screws up bad.... |

When Myers is throwing (can't bring m'self to call it "pitching"),
=everyone= is "fearsome".

I don't buy that. If he wanted to go strength-against-strength, we would
have seen one of the club's closers -- probably Villarreal. Instead, he went
with what, if one looks at career numbers rather than what's happened this
season, looked like an easy decision. After all, Mike Myers came to Arizona
for one reason only: to get Barry Bonds out.
But this is not the same Myers, and maybe not the same Bonds, either.

Jimmy Davenport was quoted on ESPN.com as saying that Bobby "had a thick
wall around his heart". Looks like a minimum ten day stay in hospital:

That, of course, should read "Valverde". Yoi.

Brenly pitching to Bonds is stupid, beyond stupid, really. He could have
been killed. But not as stupid and venal as the over-the-hill Pete Rose
calling his own number repeatedly as player/manager for the Reds. <g>
