Jones was demoted when Kotsay came off the DL, so it's Kotsay, Blanco
and Perry, with Infante/Norton in the mix too.

Also, Matt Diaz starts a rehab assignment down there as well. There's
a pretty good chance that the starting OF for MS will be better than
the starting OF for Atlanta.

Do options expire with three years of ML experience? I don't think
they do. I'm pretty sure Chipper has options left.

No, options never expire.

They just become harder to use as a player gains enough service time
to have his own options.

I know Chipper was just a f'rinstance, but if you wanted to send him
out
you'd first have to offer him his release -- options or no.

I suspect timing was an issue with Francouer. Best I can tell, he's
about a week from having enough service time that he could have
either refused the assignment or become a free agent at the end of
the year. It's certainly close.

You used to be able to get actual service time in the old
Red and Green books, but I don't know of any place that still
lists it. (He appears to have had 2 years and 88 days coming
in to the season)

I suspect you're right and combined with Francouer's griping about his
salary assignment this year (after he turned down his own mirror of
McCann's buy-out contract) and his agent's less than friendly quote in
the article above - this is the direction the team has chosen - I
wouldn't be surprised if Cap'n Freedompants is a Brave for only his
three remaining arb years.

I guess you're right, as Myers _has_ been around forever.

The primer isn't overly clear about it -- I guess the option years
are whenever you decide to use them, it just seems like it's at the
start of a career because that's when most of them are used up.

"Options"
After three years as a pro, a player must be protected on a team's
40-man roster, or he is eligible for the Rule 5 draft (more on that
later). Once he's served those three years, and assuming he is added
to the 40-man roster, his club then has what are called "options" on
him.

When a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the 25-man Major
League roster, he is on "optional assignment." One common
misconception about the rules is that a player may only be "optioned
out" three times. Actually, each player has three option years, and
he can be sent up and down as many times as the club chooses within
those three seasons.

When you hear that a player is "out of options," that means he's been
on the 40-man roster during three different seasons, beginning with
his fourth as a pro, and to be sent down again he'll have to clear
waivers (more on those below).

The reason they chose AA is that his old minor league hitting instructor is
the manager there. Not sure I like Jeff getting help from the same people
who helped him developed as the undisciplined hitter he is, but there ya go.

I hadn't thought about the service time issue, but no doubt it's a part of
the equation.

Wheni first posted the link it had only a short blurb, so I hadn't seen the
quotes. Now i see that he was given the choice of AA or AAA. I also see the
club's statement is that Francoeur will be back after the AS break, but that
hasn't made it any less painful for him.

No, I don't think we have. I think we have established that Francoeur
is playing so badly as to need a trip to the minors to iron the kinks
out of his swing and maybe learn to identify a pitch now and again.
That in no way whatsoever indicates that he is a worse player than
Jason Perry or Brandon Jones. I *might* put Gregor Blanco above him
for the time being, but the only OF on the Atlanta roster that I'd
categorically say was better than Francoeur, even as bad as he's been
this year, is a healthy Mark Kotsay. And of course, a healthy Mark
Kotsay is a rare bird indeed.
