He's basically gotten a free pass in the DC media as really nobody has moved
to actually looking at the team.

Baseball Prospectus has ripped him pretty good.

I have to say I'm extremely unhappy with every new player he's added through
FA or trade this season.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

The moves he has made have been on the cheap. Loiaza at 2.9 million is a
good deal if we get the White sox version of Loiaza and not the Yankee
version. Guzman and Castilla are ok at their price. Catcher Gary
Bennett was kind of an emergency pick up. Most teams have 3-4 catchers
on the 40 man roster. The Expos had 2. It is probably safe to assume
that Larkin will join up before opening day. He has an offer from
Bowden and is waiting to see is anyone needs an everyday shortstop.

I wish that he had made an effort to get Vasquez from the Yanks and
possibly re-sign Cabrera. I admit that both were pipe dreams with the
mandated payroll.

I will proclaim him an idiot if he brings in Sosa. I'd rather watch
Sledge develop.

My $0.02

Forgot about Jose Gullien. Good player, terrible teammate? Maybe he
will respond well to Frank Robinson. Hope so, he could be very
disruptive to a young team. This is clearly Bowden's most risky move.

Except that Baseball America rates the Expos minor league system 30th -
out of 30 teams. Under MLB's ownership the Farm system was
underbudgeted and understaffed. It will take a while to rebuild the
Farm. There are some players coming through now, but it's not the
talent pipeline like it had been in the past.

Bowden's work has been to plug the holes - patch the leaks. He has to
put a team on the field that can attract and hold the audience here in
DC for a year or so, until the new ownership is in place, and
everything is fully staffed.

Omar Minaya's tenure as GM killed us. He traded Jason Bay, Guillermo
Mota, Brandon Phillips, Cliff Lee, and Carl Pavano. With little left to
show for it....

I agree on Sosa - probably over the hill and we don't need him at any
pirce...

I disagree on Juan Rivera - his ceiling won't be as high as Guillen's
current value. Rivera won't hit 30 homers, or drive in 100.

As for undervalued players - of course, we should go for undervalued
players. Which ones - specifically - did we miss out on? What player
signing should the Nats have pursued?

At $800K Osuna is a real good value.

For his defense, and a relatively small contract, 2 years and $6.2
million - Castilla is an OK signing. There weren't any other viable and
affordable 3rd baseman free agents.

Loaiza. Ick. I would have liked an incentive laden $1.0Mil contract
with him. He's done. That one season was a fluke. He'll be gone by the
all Star break.
