I suppose everyone read Boswell on Sunday concerning the Mitchell report.
Most of the column was on target. He left out one area that deserves as
much blame as the others - MLB, Union, owners, front office, team management
and players. The media should been held accountable as well. Anyone of the
normal beat writers, network people, and sports casters over the past 15
years could have written the same book that Conseco did - if they were doing
their job. INstead they chose to hobnob with the ball players, look the
other way, and rub shoulders with stars in the clubhouse. They should not
escape attention. The damage is to the record book and the HOF. The HOF
should eliminate the practice of sportswriters electing new members since
they have already proven to be dishonest. Perhaps for a period of 10 years,
the fans should do it over the web in conjunction with the living members of
the HOF. The sportswriters are every bit the cheats as the players who took
the juice. Does anyone think that somebody like Don Sutton, for example,
did not know what was going on in the clubhouse? First guy to lose the vote
should be Buster Olney of ESPN who still wants to look the other way - and
he has a vote.

Good points, but maybe the fans are guilty also. I knew that Bonds and
McGuire were using something. The went from skinny batters to being
hulking super-sluggers. Maybe I should have boycotted the sport?

And so like who cares? We all knew, we still went to the games and we
watched on TV. Now it is like, ohmygosh they did what??? It is over so we
need to move on, now what about the NFL? I am sorry but 350 pound people
are NOT normal. It is all around in sports. We know, but we still watch
and attend the games. There are other things in life that are more
important.

I don't think it is over. I feel the sport should be cleaned up. This
isn't pro-wrestling. As a consumer of MLB, I should have confidence
that the product is clean. Best first step? Replace Selig.

I don't think we did know. Particularly fans from around here where we have
not had baseball for 30 years. It is as you say though - damage done. I
just do not want to see them in the HOF and I think the penalties should be
more than just targeted at the players. Reading Clemmons' weasel worded
statement, makes me wonder if Lanny Davis isn't writing his denials. Says
he never took any banned substances - I guess if you parse the words, Lanny
Davis style, it just means they weren't banned at the time he took them by
baseball. They were banned by the Controlled Substances Act however. Roger
needs to do what Petit did - fess up and move on.

Congress should remove baseball's anti-trust immunity as punishment.

I guess not having baseball here for a long time people did not know about
the "Bash Brothers" growing gigantic, and wonderful little Sammy Sosa
getting enlarged. Then back in the 80's there was the coke scandal, with
some high-profile names and baseball did nothing.

I also do not think these people should be in the HOF but time to move on.

If they admit it that is good, but continuing to deny when the goods are
in.....Roger, you were always a loser in my book.

I could understand not being clued into steroid use among National
League players, but the DC media covered the American League pretty well
all these years because of the Orioles. So if you were paying
attention, you should have been aware of the "Bash Brothers".

I think some of the fans, like myself had suspicions, especially during
the 1998 home run chase, after seeing McGwire give interviews after
games with his two arms bulging out like a pair of oversized legs of
lamb. But none of media wrote anything about the unusual size and shape
of his arms, so I assumed that's how some modern day ballplayers looked.

Still my suspicion is that nobody would have really cared about steroid
use in baseball if it wasn't for Barry Bonds chasing Hank Aaron's record
and Jose Canseco's tell-all book.

Look, no one really cares about steroid use in the NFL. A star NFL
player gets busted for using steroids and he is sent to the Pro Bowl the
same year!

The NFL has a much better strategy than baseball - punish the idiots who
get caught and loudly proclaim how great their testing system is, even
though the punishments are now lighter and the drugs tested for fewer
than baseball's current drug program.
