And now $3.7 million for Blanton, a guy who can't control his appetite
and weight, much less his pitches. Why do the A's do business with
predatory lawyers and agents? They should offer minimum wages to
ballplayers in person and tell them to take them or leave them and go
back to pumping gas.
My main interest in baseball is seeing which owner can outsmart the
others while paying as little as possible to players. GO A'S!

There's this little thing called a collective bargaining agreement.

Anyway, the A's didn't have to pay Blanton a dime - they always had the
option to non-tender him for free and get him cheap on the free agent
market if he really wasn't worth much. But a league average starter is
easily worth a 1-year, $3.7 million deal.

Worth to whom? Timid owners frightened of a communist union? They
should non-tender every pampered player whose contract expires, rehire
none, sign kids off the street for the national minimum wage, and pay
by the hour.

Less, because the sports-minded owners would not be pushed to the wall
paying absurd player salaries and would be able to lower ticket prices
and increase their fan bases. The Commissioner has reported that 22
owners (of 30) are losing money.

And you believe him? Funny how they never make that claim during
labor negotiations because if they did they would have to open their
books to the union.
If they are losing money money why do teams keep getting sold at huge
increases over the previous prices?
You are assuming a correlation between salaries and ticket prices.
Look at NHL prices, the sport with the lowest payrolls. look what
happened NBA and NHL prices after they instituted salary caps.
Tell me, feel the same way about the salaries paid to tv and movie stars?

Yes. That's how I know even small-town sandlotters can draw crowds. We
don't need to pamper ballplayers. There are thousands who would play
for the minimum wage. All that's required is some backbone on the part
of owners and we can take back our national pastime.

How are unions "communist"? If you knew what the term meant you
would know that real unions do not exist in Cuba or China.
How much would you pay to see minimum wage players?

He's probably still angry that a trade union played a key role in deposing
his beloved communist state in Poland.

Like a very few others in this newsgroup (ones who constantly change their
handle, ones who can only express their lack of self-esteem by swearing at
others) "wrab" is not worth taking seriously.

You can already watch these people play for free at the park. Do you?

Right, people will drive from all over to see players making $25 a game.
By the way, you never explained why, if unions are communist, they
are banned in Cuba and China .

They're perfectly free to do that.

And the team that does it would easily be the worst team in baseball
because the free market is what dictates these salaries.

You keep using the word "communist." I do not think that word means
what you think it means.

I see basic economics hasn't been absorbed through your skull.

Tell me, did you enjoy your free NCAA Final Four and Rose Bowl tickets?

That's like 10 years old and has been repeatedly been demonstrated to be
a lie anyway. Transparent, too - the Indians were publicly traded at
the time and the Blue Ribbon Panel actually had the nerve to not report
to Congress millions of dollars in revenues that the Indians reported to
toe SEC.

And, even if we assume for the sake of argument that unions tend to be
socialistic, the *MLBPA's* stance has been for free markets, which is
certainly not communist.

People do. Let me ask your attention to summer baseball in many
California cities. The players are collegians, receiving no salaries.
The quality is good, ticket prices are low, and the players actually
interact with fans.
I don't care what's banned or promoted abroad, nor is that relevant to
a baseball-oriented newsgroup; I just know the Players Association is
a conspiracy in restraint of free trade, a commnist organization.

Thanks for proving my earlier point. You have no idea what a
communist is. Plonk.
