Something tells me the Astros are going to do very little personnel
wise this off-season? I guess a lot depends on what Clemens decides
but it would sure be nice if he wouldn't leave the Astros hanging like
he did last year. The Astros really need another bat offensively but
it probably won't happen. I hope they can sign Burnitz to a relatively
inexpensive contract.

Come on, they re-signed Springer. What more do you want.

And that depends on Ausmus.

My hunch is he'll decide around Christmas, and that he will sign to play
in 2006.

Purpura has promised as much. Rather, as little. Alyson Footer's most
recent article on the issue (astros.com) suggests they're not making a
big splash. Biggest reason is payroll committed already. Second biggest
reason is it's a sellers' market -- other teams want far more in trade
than the Astros are willing to give up.

He seems to be the kind of player they're seeking: veteran outfielder
with some pop in his bat who'd benefit by platooning with the kids. I
still think he's a good fit for MMP. He sure as hell has hit well
against the Astros. The glitch now, if the Astros are interested in him,
is that the Cubs are interested in him again now that Furcal signed with
the Dodgers. Competition will drive up his price a bit.

The Astros should not resign Clemens. Spend what you can on a couple of
bats.

I don't think they had any optimism about signing him yesterday. The
comments from the Hendricks brothers indicated that they weren't in a
position to start negotiations. They told the Astros to do what they had
to do and presume he's not returning.

The Astros did the right thing -- they shouldn't offer someone
arbitration if he's not committed to playing. That would leave them in a
bad position from the standpoint of possibly going to arbitration, where
Clemens would get something in the $20m range, and from the standpoint
that he could still decide after arbitration not to play. And that's
while other teams are wheeling and dealing amongst themselves and with
free agents.

The Astros can't hold an entire season's preparations hostage to one
player's caprice.

That was the general concensus on the talk shows as well.
