I think that you could find players on any major or minor league
baseball who were using steroids illegally. And I think you would
find managers and owners were aware of the activity at some level, but
did nothing because it is a pervasive practice. Washington Nationals
included. Going on endless McCarthy-like witchhunts to discover all of
the past and current steroid users and enablers in baseball will do
nothing to correct the problem. It will only provide full employment
for thousands of lawyers through decades of litigation. The steps
we should take after the Mitchell report should be focused on stopping
the behaviour now and in the future. Some of those steps should
include ongoing testing, serious penalties and a willingness to hold
to those penalties no matter how painful they may be to team
performance. First infraction the player is out for a season and the
team can't bring up a replacement from the minors. Second infraction
and you are out of baseball permanently.
