We are planning to go to Atlanta for my first game at Turner Field.
Thinking of taking Marta to/from game. Suggestions?
May stay at hotel near airport. Is that a good idea?
Should I just drive/park at stadium? How much is parking?

Thanks.

Are you flying in? If not, I wouldn't go to the airport. I'm no
great fan of airport hotels in general and the ATL hotels are all a
bit outdated to boot. If you're flying in take a cab into Downtown,
Midtown or Buckhead. You can get a nicer hotel for the same money in
any of othose neighborhoods. You can also get from those hotels to
MARTA quickly. If you're driving and you don't want to navigate the
city, stay in one of the inner 'burbs. Plenty of hotels out there.
You can find nice places on the north- and southsides if you look.
Take time to verify that you're not booking into a sketchy area out
there, though.

There are also a couple of hotels right next to Turner Field. You
could walk to the game from those.

MARTA is a good option for getting to the game. It keeps you out of
the pre- and post-game traffic jams. Either walk from your hotel (in
town) or find the closest station with parking ('burbs) and take the
train into Five Points Station. Exit at Five Points and follow the
sign/crowds to the Braves Shuttle. It's a 5-10 minute ride on the
shuttle, free of charge with your MARTA token. They drop you off and
pick you up at the stadium entrance.

Marta doesn't get you very close to the stadium, but they do run a shuttle
from Underground to the stadium. See the following link. I go to about
6-10 games per year and I always drive.

Ummm...., how best to say this? Staying at Six Flags? Sure. Decent
hotel options and you can double up the fun park if you have the
time. Hamilton Holmes? No. Not a good entry point. To be
completely and unceremoniously blunt about it, HEHolmes is the 'hood.
Now, you're almost certainly safe and fine if you go that route, but
generally speaking it's not on the tourist map. Unless things have
changed since last I was out that way you will sort of stand out as a
tourist to the southwest ATL. There are up and coming neighborhoods
around HEH but HEH is not, at my last pass, one of them.

If I were staying out at Six Flags I'd probably just bite the bullet
and drive to the game. It's a straight shot down I20, direct exit
access to stadium parking (get to a patrolled lot, of course) and the
interestate traffic coming in from the west isn't as bad as game day
traffic on the north-south connector. If you go to the stadium early
you can avoid the pre-game crush. $10-20 should get you patrolled
parking. Any of the color coded lots (Green, Orange, Blue) directly
adjacent to the stadium are your most official options. You can get a
$5 parking space in local lots which is safe enough but a longer walk
to the field.

Your other option would be to drive a couple more MARTA stops in - GA
Dome maybe - and find parking there, but at that point you're 3/4 of
the way to the stadium and paying as much for MARTA as you would for
parking at the Ted.

Thinking about staying out by Six Flags...and maybe driving to Marta Station
at Hamilton E Holmes?
What's the time frame for getting to Stadium from out there?

If you're solid with HEHolmes I'll back you up. When I think of
HEHolmes I think of the actual neighborhood, not the MARTA station.

My two cents, which I've mentioned here before, is to pick up MARTA at
Hamilton Holmes, especially if you're around the Six Flags area. You'll go
to 5 Points and pick up a bus to the stadium. Works like a charm for us
folk gone too long.

i'm thinking HEH is not the stop to go to either. unless you know a few
choruses of this tune:
http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=vQTuYo6HmiQ
catchy tune, and you'll find yourself singing along.

i know, SWD is the other side of town, i was just looking for an excuse to
post it.

That is my preference. After booking the hotel out the back gate and
walking directly to my room afterwards (as short a walk as getting to
your car or Marta shuttle), I'm sold on this option. I was impressed
at how reasonable their rates were considering the convenience.

Nothing like washing the grime of a hot summer evening off right
away.

Last I checked. I haven't been that way in years though.
