DeWitt's home run tonite, his BA and play at 3b have convinced me he
deserves the job. But what happens when Nomar is well -- Nomar becomes super
inf sub, and Hu goes down? And what happens when/if LaRoach starts tearing
up AAA?
In the OF, Torre is being patient with Jones, while Kemp is NL player of the
week; Ethier has sat 2 nites; and Juan Pierre puts the ball in play, uses
speed to spark rallies, and is hitting 330 or so. Torre can't BE patient
with Jones without actually PLAYING him. So what happens here? Barring an
injury, which is certainly not a helpful resolution.

You don't think an injury is a helpful resolution? really? because night
before last when he dove for a ball (and missed of course) I was pleading
for an injury. It seems like the only chance that Torre will sit him down
for a week, or two, or ten. I know he is (was) much better than he has been
playing but everyone else has managed to finally get it going and here's AJ
like a big anchor dragging the team down. There isn't a team out there that
will take him even if the Dodgers continued to pay him so right now an
injury is the most helpful resolution there can be.

Excellent questions, excellent points, Hal..
Wish I had answers for you.
But seriously folks, what Torre has now is an embarrassment of riches, the
sort of problems managers pray for. If LaRoach develops into what they think
he will and DeWitt continues to perform this well, the Dodgers will have to
stop recruiting guys with French surnames.
But seriously, again, I don't see Torre benching a healthy Garciaparra.
Platooning, maybe, benching no. So one of the kids just may end up trade
bait by mid season.
Outfield: it kills me to say this but I honestly believe Ethier is going to
be traded at some point. I doubt anyone wants Pierre with his bloated salary
( and by the way, this sudden burst of production seems to be the result of
his having to prove himeself.. he does have a lot of pride.. trade Ethier,
give him the position and I doubt he'd play this well) Jones ain't going
anywhere other than to the DL if AG gets her Machiavellian wish (:>).
Pitching is going to be an issue. We do not have a viable 5th starter and a
trade is inevitable.
OK.. let's rumble.

I'd really, really hate to see Etheir sent for near-worthless option
like a #5 starter. Maybe Schmidt will be able to come back and fill the
role, or Kershaw later in the year. If we have to trade Ethier, I'd
rather see him in a package for a solid 3B.
I still like AG's solution the best. Maybe we should take up a
collection and have Tonya Harding's crew pay a visit to Jones at
whatever buffet he seems to be frequenting.
