The people and positions they can somewhat reliably play:

C - Lopez, Gil
1B - Palmeiro, Segui, Surhoff, Gibbons
2B - Hairston, Roberts
3B - Mora(we'll see anyway)
SS - Tejada, Roberts, Mora
OF - Bigbie, Matos, Gibbons, Cordova, Surhoff
DH - Cust, anyone

That's 14, so someone ain't gonna make it. I'd guess that at least one
of our old or oft-injured guys starts out on the DL. It is true that
Palmeiro hasn't missed a significant amount of time in 15 years, but he
will break soon.

The first potential source or problem is 3B. We don't have a 3B. I
read a while ago that Mora is supposed to be practicing 3B in Venezuela
so that he can play. What happens if he gets hurt or makes an error
every game? Can BJ still play over there? Do we still have Jose Leon?
Is he playing this winter? How is he doing? How does he look long term?

I have not heard a single thing about Marty Cordova since he went on the
DL last year. How is he progressing? Is he expected to be fully healed
by spring training? I am assuming that he is not being considered for a
starting position.

Does any action need to be taken concerning Roberts/Hairston? Do we try
to trade one of them or just have them platoon? If trade, who and when?
Before the season starts or near the deadline?

Does Palmeiro have any deadline trade value? Are there any teams that
could be on the playoff bubble whose 1B or DH is worse than Palmeiro?
If so, is this why we picked him up, to hope that he does not get
injured and plays well?

There is a cynical report that the Orioles will try to convince David
Segui to start on DL. I remember reading this somewhere.

Starting the season with 14 position players is not unusual. Also,
having 11 men pitching staff is not unusual.

4 men rotation to start the season until 5th starter is needed. I am
not really sure about the rotation, but the Orioles will try to sign a
pitcher such as Ponson or Maddux. (More likely Ponson)

SP: FA, DuBose, Lopez, Ainsworth, Riley.
RP: Parrish, Groom, Ryan, Julio, Bauer, DeJean.

Of course, Riley could be sent down to start the season and Willis
Roberts may be in the bullpen.
