Aside from the fact that the poster to whom you responded conveniently
ignored the fact that the Pirates won three straight division crowns
from 1990-1992 when Bonds was a member of the team, and haven't been
above .500 once since letting him walk as a free agent, I think
there's a lot more BALCO fallout in the Mitchell report than just
Baroid, Dan:
* Marvin Benard's got "the clear" and "the cream" from Greg Anderson
and was subpoenaed to appear before the BALCO grand jury.
* Bobby Estalella got HGH from Anderson and admitted receiving
substances to the grand jury. Furthermore, "Game of Shadows" alleged
that Estalella had received a drug schedule from Anderson advising him
to use HGH, "the cream" and "the clear" and Clomid. The latter is a
female fertility drug, but trust me on this one, that ain't about
Estalella getting in touch with his feminine side.
* Jason Giambi told the BALCO grand jury that he used steroids
obtained from Anderson and used HGH, and told the Mitchell
investigation he used "the cream" and "the clear" and that he got it
from Anderson.
* Jeremy Giambi testified before the BALCO grand jury and BALCO
founder Victor Conte said he sold "the cream" and "the clear" to both
Jason and Jeremy Giambi.
* Armando Rios testified before the BALCO grand jury and, according to
the Mitchell report, told a federal agent he bought HGH and
testosterone from Anderson.
* Benito Santiago told the BALCO grand jury he got HGH and a steroid
from Anderson.
* Gary Sheffield HBO he used "the clear" and "the cream" and named
Bonds as having arranged for Sheffield to receive those substances,
which are of course BALCO products..
* Randy Velarde received steroids and human growth hormone from BALCO
In fact, Mitchell and his investigators leveraged the BALCO (and other
law enforcement/legal investigations) more than they uncovered
anything on their own, which is not surprising considering Mitchell
had no subpoena power.
However, remember the name Henry Waxman. He's a congressman from
California who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform
Committee, which will be holding hearings into the Mitchell Report,
and he will soon be hauling Selig, Mitchell, and MLBPA honcho Donald
Fehr before a congressional committee that *does* have subpoena power.
